“How do we find a ring that reflects our values?”
We were looking for an emblem of our love. Instead, we found environmentally destructive mining practices, slave labor, bloody supply chains…glimmering diamonds holding murky, scary secrets. As a newly engaged couple deeply passionate about each other and the inherent rights of all people and the Earth itself, we were jarred by the ugly truth behind elegant jewelry.
Not wanting to perpetuate these long-standing industry horrors, we began collecting rings from our families with the intention of upcycling existing stones. As we amassed these rings, we also collected stories. We realized that jewelry represents a weaving of meaning and connection throughout generations – totems and icons of the love between spouses, parents, children. Our marriage is a union, and this union motivated us to become agents of change.
This change now has a name. We launched Chapter Six in 2020. The looming threat of climate change has transitioned from an abstract theory to a dangerous truth. As global citizens, we’ve often felt lost and hopeless about our own personal ability to make a change for the better. Through Chapter Six jewelry we have created a company that actively practices supply chain transparency and ethical consumption. Too often modern businesses are at odds with modern activism.
With Chapter Six, we have created a company that sacrifices neither and retains the integral spirit of both. Jewelry is a medium that highlights the beauty in the world. Its appeal is physical and emotional, deeply symbolic and visually satisfying. It reminds us not only of our collective dependency on the planet and it’s shining resources (like gold and precious gems), but of commitments, special moments, and loving ourselves.
WHY CHAPTER SIX
We are currently in the sixth mass extinction event known to the planet. The UN report that one million animal and plant species are facing the threat of extinction.
